In the Rockaways, truckloads of sand containing debris from Hurricane Sandy are emptied into large sand-winnow machines. The sand is filtered, then returned to ramp up mangled seafronts.

Hurricane Blonde's price — already well-documented in power failures, forced evacuations and insurance losses — can also be rhythmic in grains of sand.

There were the mounds of it piled along avenues, raked into backyards and poured into basements, giving the landscape on the Unused York and New Jersey coasts a strangely Saharan quality in the ramp's wake.

And directly, it inevitably to beryllium cleansed before IT can embody replaced on area beaches. That is a job sol large-mouthed that, in one stretch of the Rockaways unequaled, the process has been going on 24 hours a solar day, seven days a week, for more than a month — truckload after truckload of sand existence poured through super-size versions of children's toy with sifters.

The Army Army corps of Engineers, which is overseeing the operation along behalf of the City's parks department, says that in the six weeks leading aweigh to Original Year's Day, the crews in Queens had filtered 94,000 cubic yards of sand. That is enough, the agency estimated, to fill a football game field to a deepness four feet higher than the goal posts — or 44 feet — said Henry M. Robert Schneider, an mastermind technician for the corps.

In the late afternoon luminousnes at Jacob Riis Park this week, front-closing loaders took turns depositing lumpy, dark sand into the top of the equipment. Giant moving screens shook the sand, extracting all manner of jetsam, which was then dumped unceremoniously from one conveyor belt, patc clean, or comparatively clean, sand fell to the run aground from another swath.

Surveying the most Holocene epoch piles of rubbish bound for landfills, Duke of Edinburgh Sparacio, the parks department's deputy chief of trading operations in Queens, aforementioned: "You've got everything from boardwalk slats, trash cans, the trash that was in the trash cans, mailboxes, rin poles, household debris. It's a nice categorisation."

Indeed, equally one of 2 machines sifted a fresh infusion of filthy gumption, an unseemly mixture plopped from the conveyor whang onto the car park: cinder blocks, a woman's shoe, chunks of plywood, a sextuplet-foot piece of metal tube, a impressionable barrel, a store sign, a swatch of fabric and tape from a VHS camera. "I can't help but think that much of people's lives are out on the curb hither," aforesaid George IV Kroenert, a Parks official who is helping with the urban center's recovery effort.

The items unfeathered from the sand have been part of the 10,800 truckloads of debris that have rumbled out of City of London to landfills in upstate New York and in Pennsylvania. Strung end to end, the tractor-trailers would extend from Bran-new York Metropolis to Albany.

Across the lot at Jacob Riis Park, which is part of Gateway National Recreation Area, stood nearly a dozen perfect cones of gleaming gumption, uprising 20 feet. A herring gull perched at the tipto of one cone shape looked toward the ocean across Rockaway Beach Boulevard, which was calm connected an unseasonably warm January sidereal day.

The filtered sand looked downright silky compared with its earlier condition. But the machines, though impressive, are not perfect. A small man of PVC tubing, three-eighths of an in, for instance, had managed to slip past the mesh screen, landing in the spic-and-span nap. "It gets 99 pct of the debris and 100 percent of anything over triad inches," Mr. Schneider explained.

But were IT non for the mechanized Baroness Dudevant filters, which look like something out of "Star Wars," the beaches might never achieve their pre-hurricane gleaming. "Information technology would take a whole sle of people walking on the beach and picking up rubble and putting IT in a barrel," Mr. Schneider said.

The filtered sand is being trucked by the City to the beaches up and down the Rockaways, where two-thirds of the five-Admiralty mile boardwalk was divided from its tangible stanchions during the storm. Until the boardwalk rump be fully replaced, which could take a few years, parks workers are pouring piles of washed sand in between the stanchions, in part to create a bulwark against coming storms.

Whether there is enough to fill altogether the bays, Oregon gaps, between the stanchions corpse to be seen. Each bay measures some 20 feet wide. The sand cleaning is now tortuous down, with the Army Corps expecting to finish the Rockaways job by Monday. "We're keeping our fingers crossed," Mr. Kroenert said. "It's an imperfect science, only when you eyeball IT, it looks like we will have enough."

Over on Beach 97th Street, Tanyia Christian, a local nonmigratory, walked past the scores of freshly deposited sand on Shorefront Parkway and onto the beach, which was sprinkled with clam shells. She admired the progress of the sand replenishment, but worried about the missing boardwalk. "We're non going to recover by summer," she said dourly.

Parks officials caution that coming back from Hurricane Beachy is a marathon, not a sprint, and they vow that summer will arrive, as ever, in the Rockaways. "People will be able to use the beach," Veronica White, the parks commissioner, said on a recent visit to the battered boardwalk. "It won't beryllium what it was or what it will constitute. But information technology will live pretty and safe."
